Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs is a thin client operating system from Microsoft, based on Windows XP Embedded, but optimized for older, less powerful hardware. Page 7 of 45 - Universal HDD Image files for XP and Windows 7 - posted in FileDisks/RamDisks: Firadisk, etc.: Note: I want all the drivers merged with the installed XP, not just the drivers for the current hardware. The main purpose here is to create a universal xp. I could integrate the drivers with the installation media but I am using XP FLP(Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PC) and the ISO. Jan 25, 2008 - This is where Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs comes in. The Windows FLP installation CD is about 600MB, so you can just image the ISO onto. My advice: download Firefox right away, as well as a virus scanner (I. Thanks to Brian Tylo for the suggestion! Today, we will be taking a look at Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs, or for short, Windows FLP. This version of Windows was based off of Windows XP and was designed for computers with lower specs.

I think it's possible to install MSE just by replacing some buildstrings in the registry (just during install, turn them back after install is complete to avoid problems).

I tried on a fresh install of FLP in Virtualbox. By default the MSE setup will give you an invalid version of Windows error. I disabled the internet connection in Virtualbox and used TweatNT to change the version to XP Pro. After a reboot the MSE setup initialized began setup but then said I was using a counterfeit copy of Windows. I don't know how it knows because I didn't allow it internet access. Both Windows XP Pro SP3 and FLP SP3 report a Windows version of
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111 : Service Pack 3)

Built-in Windows Geniune Advantage maybe, that recognises buildstring mods or something?

Could be. Like I said there is no circumstance where somebody would be within license terms running MSE on FLP. FLP is only available for members of Microsoft Software Assurance program which is usually only large businesses and schools. MSE is only meant for home/personal use and small businesses with 10 or less computers. No business with 10 or less computers is going to be a member of Microsoft Software Assurance. Most businesses this size are using OEM or individually licensed computers.
Chances are Microsoft knows that FLP has leaked to the internet and they don't want people using MSE on it so they wrote something in MSE to specifically look for FLP during installation and refuse to install on it since by default FLP is considered genuine Windows XP, and the build number is the same as XP Pro.
You can install newer versions of WMP in FLP, even the ones that only install on genuine Windows. But you can also choose to not install WMP at all and this will leave you with WMP 6.4 (AKA mplayer2) which is better on older systems.

I am just wondering, how exactly did all of us that have WinFLP get it? I know I didn't pirate my copy, it was given to me along with an XP Corporate disk when a local business went out of business.

Remember that Microsoft Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PC's is not your regular Microsoft Windows XP (Professional).
It is build from Microsoft Windows Embedded, that is an lighter version of XP but with full XP functionality (if you select components in the builder) and it can be build by yourself to be exactly what that computer (thin client) needs.
About how to get it.
It is only available to SA Customers and only need it if their PC still runs Windows 98 but regular XP is to heavy.
@compgeke:
When that local business went out of business they actually broke the EULA with that (I think) giving you the discs, but then again, if they didn't brake it you wouldn't have such nice discs.
Also you could please scan (under the Scanner or copier) your CD and post the image here?
(If it is an official disc from Microsoft.
And make an .ISO and post the size / hash from it.

Maybe if you extract the MSE installer and try to install the msu/msi files by hand it works?
There's always a way to get it running.
EDIT: It's legitlib.dll inside the MSE installer that needs to be moddified. It's simular to the hack to wmp11 beta on cracked windows versions, but different value and offset since it's a newer version of the file.

You can install MSE on unsupported windows versions by modifying the msi with orca. But when it is installed, it only works for 30 days, and has constant popups saying windows is not genuine on (genuine) server 2008 r2.

Could I get a scan of the FLP disc?

Here is a quick tutorial how to start Debian and probably other Debian based distros from a USB Hard Disk. With USB Flash Drive usually there is no need for any custom actions.

1) Once the installer complains for missing CDROM and asks to load CDROM drivers select NO:

2) On the question “Manually select a CD-ROM module and device?” select YES:

3) On “Module needed for accessing the CD-ROM” select NONE:4) On “Device file for accessing the CD-ROM” type /dev/sda4, or if that doesn’t work try /dev/sdb
Iso4, dev/hda4, /dev/hdb

Pcs4 etc. depending what device name the USB disk got:

You can get the available device names by pressing ALT+F2 to enter a new console and type:
ls /dev/
or
dmesg grep disk

Just remember, it has to be the fourth partition, e.g. /dev/sda4.
Next press ALT+F1 to return to the Setup screen.
