As a gift, I've purchased for my nephew an Xbox One Controller (for PC) to use as a wired controller on his Windows 7 PC. It is my understanding that for use with Windows 7, a driver download will be necessary (unlike Windows 10, which natively supports the controller without the need to install drivers). It is highly recommended to always use the most recent driver version available.
Try to set a system restore point before installing a device driver. This will help if you installed an incorrect or mismatched driver. Problems can arise when your hardware device is too old or not supported any longer.
